Norton, Massachusetts which is part of Bristol County was originally part of the Taunton North Purchase. The people of this area wanted to create a separate precinct or form another town altogether as more and more people settled there because they had to travel long distances on rough roads, which made it difficult to attend church services in Taunton. In 1709 the area became known as the North Precinct of Taunton because the settlers petitions for the right to become a precinct, a church and a minister. On June 12, 1711, the North Precinct of Taunton became its own town, know today as Norton.
Norton was uniquely designed; it consisted of seven different villages. The original villages were Norton Center, Norton Furnace, E. Norton, Crane's, Barrowsville, Chartley and Winnecunnet. Each village was different with its own heritage and characteristics. Some of the villages had their own fire stations, post offices, schools, and railroad stations. The villages varied with different types of people, and some of them were composed of immigrants. It just depended on what types of industries emerged in what area. Two of Norton's historians, George A. Yelle and Ruth E. Goold, wrote a book called "Images of America-Norton" with a more detailed history of Norton.
